Cambodia’s Bakong payment system takes spotlight at China forum


[Khmer Times]: Chea Serey, Governor of the National Bank of Cambodia (NBC), Tuesday highlighted the role of the Bakong payment system in improving financial access, enhancing operational efficiency and supporting the growth of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) across the Kingdom.

Speaking at the ‘2026 Tsinghua PBCSF Global Financial Forum in China’ themed ‘Global Financial Governance in A Changing World: New Challenges, New Opportunities and New Developments’, Serey stressed the important role of MSMEs in supporting Cambodia’s economic growth and business activities, while also sharing Cambodia’s experience in improving the financial climate and expanding financing support for sustainable MSME development.

On the final day of the gathering, the forum featured panel discussions on topics including Tech Finance Empowering Emerging Industry; Reshaping the Financial System for the Longevity Era; Green Finance and Sustainable Development; New Challenges in Financial Regulation: Green, Digital and AI; and Cultural Consumption Boost: Serving the National Strategy of Expanding Domestic Demand.

Serey participated as a speaker in a panel discussion on ‘Inclusive Finance and Financing Development for Small and Medium Enterprises’, alongside Bei Duoguang, President of the Chinese Academy of Financial Inclusion of the Renmin University of China; Alfred Hannig, CEO of Alliance for Financial Inclusion (AFI); and Ma Honglin, General Manager of Chengdu Jiaozi Financial Holding Group.

During the panel discussion, she highlighted NBC’s ongoing efforts in promoting digital financial innovation, strengthening financial infrastructure and implementing supportive policy measures aimed at improving wider access to formal financial services, particularly for MSMEs operating in both urban and rural areas across the Kingdom.
